Mason is entering his third year at the helm of the Vikings rodeo program. “He’s really taught me a lot of what I know about the sport.” “Coach Mason taught me how to ride short,” he said with a laugh. “He’s changed the program a lot.”īrennecke, who stands well over 6 feet, very tall for a rodeo cowboy, had to think small. “He’s a really good leader,” Brennecke said of his coach. His first year ended with a 15th-place finish at nationals.Īfter Brennecke’s freshmen year, Mason took over as coach. “I came knowing a good amount about the sport,” he said. His freshman year was a dynamic one, as college reintroduced him to the sport. “I didn’t realize it until they started recruiting me,” he said. He was surprised when the NAIA school recruited him, mostly because he didn’t know there was college rodeo. While in Independence, Brennecke competed in various area rodeo competitions. “It’s a good school to be at,” Brennecke said.īrennecke graduated from Fort Osage High School and was also an Eagle Scout. The Vikings finished sixth at in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association standings this year. Missouri Valley competes in the Ozark region, which includes other schools in Alabama, Arkansas and Tennessee. He’s been to nationals all three of his years, but he’s yet to make it back to the second round of competition, finishing just out of the top 12 that return for the next round. But in our sport, you have to compete on what is drawn to you at random.īrennecke, who’s been in the sport since he was 12, was third in his region this year, allowing him to go to nationals, as the top three from each region are taken to compete. ![]() “Here’s the issue, you’ve got to draw four animals that allow you to showcase your ability. ![]() “In this sport, it’s man versus a bucking horse,” Mason said. Not that it was his fault, as Mason explained. “It wasn’t as good as I had hoped it would be,” Brennecke said. At this year’s College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo., Brennecke finished 15th, which isn’t bad, by any means, but … He puts the hours and hard work in.”īut Brennecke hasn’t exactly finished where next college national champions finish. “He’s willing to do absolutely anything to be the best.
